Blog 2

Today I will be sharing with you one of my favorite YouTube channels called mental floss. It is also a magazine that is filled with fun facts but there are also many YouTube channels dedicated to mental floss.
Anyways, in this video with John Green (author of #1 New York Times best seller The Fault in our Stars as well as many other teen novels) you will get to learn

48 Names for Things You Didn't Know Had Names

I picked this Video because it has a lot to do with language. We don't realize that the common things we do/see/feel actually have names for them. I also picked this video because John Green is fantastic and so funny and nerdy. This Video tells us some names of things we didn't know and where the names came from. We also learn names of certain types of words which I find most interesting. It's also incredible that there are words in the English language for so many things but we don't need to use them in everyday conversation so we just don't learn those words.
I feel like this video is telling us that there is a lot that we don't know about the language that we speak everyday. I agree with this because he proves this to us in the video.
This video opened my eyes and made me realize that I still have a lot to learn about language and that it can be fun to learn about it!
The fact that our language is so vast affects the world because to non-English speaking people this language can be difficult! I don't realize how lucky I am that English was my first language. We can see that language really is limitless.

  1. I loved this video! Hahah. I love the reference to Phineas and Ferb. There was a whole song about the aglet. I actually found it on YouTube. I definitely agree with you. It seems like we take things for granted and really don't know the names for things in our life. I also agree that language is limitless. I think this video is super cool. Thanks for sharing!

  2. This was so awesome! I have subscibed to this channel!! Thank you! I have to agree with you and Stella, we take too many things for granted. There are far too many things that have name that we usually just describe rather than saying the word for it. English is so hard. I am also greatful that English was my first language!!

  3. I enjoyed watching the video, it had interesting facts. However, I was not surprise that we do not know many English words because we do not use it or no one taught us the words. No one can truly know their language perfectly, there are just numerous words in one language. Some people might memorize thousands of words, yet their would still be more words out there that are created.
The majority of the words, I did not even know. Then again, I never bothered to look up those words in a dictionary. I believe part of the reason why we do not know them is because we simply do not care to find the proper name. We either find another way to express ourselves or not express it at all. After watching the video, it made me wonder if there are words to how we feel but unable to describe or find the right words for it. Either way, I am glad as a child I learn English. English tends to add words from other languages, which makes it hard to learn if people are learning English. However, not even English speakers know the grammar rules or every word in the dictionary, which the youtube video proved.

  5. That video was really funny! I have heard of John Green because I read A LOT, but I didn't know he was in videos like the one you posted. It's definitely fun to learn all the words everyone doesn't know that perfectly describe different things like the inability to get out of bed in the morning (a.k.a- monday) or that feeling when your foot falls asleep or even that spot you can't quite reach that itches on your back. I loved it! Thanks for sharing.
